In the city famous for its many coffee shops, I was not expecting much more than coffee, coffee, or coffee. I was completely wrong ! While I spent a semester studying there, I discovered that Melbourne offered a surprising diversity of snacks and desserts. Whether you have a sweet craving after a good restaurant or want to grab something with your friends. I am sure you will find some inspiration in the list below.
These shops were all tested and approved by me so I hope you enjoy my favorite sweet snack them as much as I did !
Shortstop Coffee & Donuts 🍩 : The cozy one
In a small lane close to La Trobe Street, is hidden my favorite coffee shop in the city. Opened until 5 p.m., Shortstop is a cozy and delicious place that sells coffee and donuts ! Their donuts are freshly made and change according to the seasons. It creates a variety of tastes to try out and discover. As for coffee, they only have a black or a flat white, still, I enjoyed the flat white gets along well with a donut.
If you can’t find a place to seat, take it away and stroll through the famous Guildford Lane Street Art in front of the shop.

La Petite Crêperie 🇫🇷 : The french one
La Petite Crêperie is a famous kiosk at the corner of Little Collins & Swanston Streets. The staff welcomes you with a “Bonjour” and takes your order while they prepare the famous crêpes. Usually, people queue up to wait but I assure you they are worth the wait ! You can customize it with anything you want.
They open late in the afternoon until 10 or 11 p.m
Address: Opposite Melbourne Town Hall, 125 Swanston Street, Melbourne CBD
Gotcha Fresh Tea : The trendy one
Before I came to Melbourne, I never drank bubble tea. I had tried it once and didn’t like it so I never tried again.
However, my roommates in Melbourne were big fans of it, so a quick look forward to a month later, I want to drink one every single day !
After trying out most of the brands in the city, I always went back to Gotcha. The brand has a wide variety of drinks: milk teas, fruit teas, and my go-to order: Brown sugar. Compared to other stores, I feel like Gotcha is a good start if you are not used to drinking bubble tea. Unlike, Xing Fu Tang which specializes in Brown Sugar, or Yifang which is more for Fruit teas, I feel like Gotcha is pretty good at everything.
Their store in Melbourne Central is the best if you want to sit down and relax.

Beku Gelato 🍦: The surprising one
If not for my friends, I would probably have never set foot in this store. Why? This store has the most peculiar flavors of ice cream I have ever seen. Usually, when I go out for ice cream I rarely get creative and stick to my regular scoop of vanilla. Beku does not have vanilla ice cream. They have Teh Tarik, Ube, and Howicha. If these don’t ring any bells for you as they did for me, the staff can give you a small taste before you choose your scoop ! They are very helpful and even welcoming so don’t be afraid to ask them ! I discovered flavors I would never have tried otherwise so I highly recommend Beku if you want some ice cream changes !
Address: 150 Lygon Street, Carlton
Yo-chi 🍨: The classic but still amazing one
On the other hand, Yo-chi is a more typical ice cream place but it does not make it any less good ! Here, you pay for the weight of your ice cream not the number of scoops ! So you start at the back of the store, with all the ice cream flavors which you can mix as much as you want. Then, you head to the best part, the toppings ! They have a wide variety of fruits, sweets, or syrups to choose from so you can get very creative !
The shop is large but it can get very crowded at night. So if you want to chill, I would advise going after lunch or in the afternoon.
Address: 194 Faraday Street, Carlton
Adozen Adozen (Pancakes) 🥞: The breakfast one
Two words: Fluffy Pancakes. That may already be enough for you to head to Adozen Adozen but if you still need motivation, this shop also has an amazing hot chocolate. At first glance, it may be a lot for a snack but I shared a plate with my friend after a long study session and it was perfect. From maple syrup to tiramisu you can find delicious combinations to mix with these amazing pancakes. Adozen Adozen also has a large variety of drinks. I already mentioned the hot chocolate but they also have fresh and signature drinks that can surprise you.
Address: 188 Queensberry Street, Carlton
Hareruya Pantry 🇯🇵: The aesthetic one
Hareruya Pantry combines Mochi and ice cream perfectly. This small pantry offers several ice cream options like matcha, sesame, or tiramisu. With the scoop of ice cream, the staff creates a mochi by folding the mochi dough around the bowl. You can add some toppings if you want some extra flavors. The combination between the mochi and ice cream is really good and it changes from your regular mochi or scoop of ice cream.
Hareruya is famous for its mochis but it also sells Lattes, some bentos, and sandwiches. The place can get crowded, so if you can, avoid lunch or dinner time.
Address: 15-17 Lincoln Square S, Carlton
Brunetti Oro 🍰: The loud one
This is the most sophisticated dessert place I found in Melbourne. Brunetti is a crowded and fancy café focusing on individual pastries and cakes. Most of them are typical Italian/European cakes like tiramisu, cannoli, or macarons. The cakes’ texture is very soft and melts in your mouth so I highly recommend trying one out. They are sold in small portions but you can order a bigger one for an event. To go along with the pastries, Brunetti has a large choice of drinks hot, cold, and alcohol so you can easily find something you will like.
The café is constantly packed but I always manage to find a place to sit, so don’t hesitate to go inside and have a look. The main advantage of Brunetti is that it usually opens early and closes late (7 a.m. to 10 p.m.) so you don’t have to worry about the time.
Address: 250 Flinders Lane, Melbourne CBD
Kurimu 🇯🇵: The when you are in a rush one
Kurimu is a brand specializing in choux pastries filled with custard. I know it might not come first into your mind if you are looking for a dessert, but it is a delicious choice if you are on the go and want something to take away. The choux are really crunchy and the custard not too sweet so it makes a pleasant snack. Be careful when you eat one, the custard can sometimes drip so keep the paper bag with you !
